Powerful but Easy to Control
Don't be fooled by the small, compact design of the Mantis Tiller/Cultivator. Though it weighs a mere 20 pounds and has a width of only nine inches, the Mantis is powerful, thanks to its two-cycle, commercial-grade gas engine.

A reliable push-button primer will get you started, but the tines won't move until you squeeze the throttle. Once you've activated the throttle, the patented serpentine tines spin at up to 240 RPM to break through sod--even hard clay--tilling down to a depth of 10 inches.

The Mantis Tiller/Cultivator makes it easy to maintain your garden. Simply reverse the tines to shallow-cultivate depths of up to three inches--it's much faster than using hand tools. And because it tills a nine-inch-wide path, this tool is especially useful in tight spaces and hard-to-reach areas. That's a real advantage for raised-bed gardeners.

Convenient, Versatile, and Durable
The Mantis Tiller/Cultivator features folding handle bars which make it convenient to store in a garage or tool shed.

And with the included border edger accessory and optional attachments (sold separately), the Mantis tiller can be used beyond the confines of your garden. Its lightweight design, convenient carrying handle, and adjustable kickstand make it portable, so adding an accessory such as a hedge trimmer could potentially keep you busy all summer and into the fall.

The tiller/cultivator's durable one-piece cast gear box is designed to last. Additionally, the tines are guaranteed against breakage for the lifetime of the tool.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! I just regret I hesitated so long   September 24, 2006

This little machine is GREAT! I needed something to help me clear out my overgrown yard in Michigan. I read so many reviews about the Mantis Tiller but just couldn't believe it would work that great. My yard is pure clay and hasn't been taken care off for 7 years. They offered a good deal with a one year satisfaction warranty (or full refund). So I tried it and, believe me, I wouldn't take the refund! This is a great little workhorse. I am an average-sized woman and I have absolutely no problems maneuvering this tiller. It starts fine if you don't set the choke too high. It is very light and not very hard to move since you basically pull it back and forth like a vacuum cleaner. It turns compact soil much better than my neighbor's big equipment. I've owned it for two years and really think it is one of the best purchases I've ever made!

5 out of 5 stars The secret to using the Mantis Tiller   May 24, 2007

I have owned two Mantis Tillers. The first one was stolen from my shed before I ever used it. Now I am putting in over 200 feet of 4-ft wide mulch beds - breaking new ground and I've discovered the secret after doing 80 feet of it. Many people complain about these type of units hopping around on hard soil. Once the ground is broken they work very well, indeed. The secret is this: They are designed with the handles in too high of a position relative to the angle of the engine and tines. I quickly learned by trial-and-error that if I leaned over at the waist and lowered the handle grips down to the level of my knees the hopping around stopped IMMEDIATELY. In fact, the tines then feel as though they want to burrow into new ground, rather than trying to skid across it. However, that leaning over is uncomfortable for my lower back. So I simply disassembled the two handle extensions where they join in the middle, exchanged their positions and flipped them over so the hand grips face upward. This is an easy one minute process. I then rerouted the control wires to the gas lever -- which was not very difficult. My unit now cuts AMAZINGLY WELL in new ground. I just wrote Mantis to inform their Engineering Dept. Whether they test this or not will be up to them. But I can swear to you it improves the cutting proficiency by -- dare I say it? -- leaps and bounds. Ha! I am now cutting into rock-strewn hard-packed soil like never before. Highly recommended in this configuration.

5 out of 5 stars Mantis Tiller   March 3, 2007

I am not sure why the rating is not higher for this one, I own one and it starts every year and is a quick starter all year. The blades/attachments are legendary. I have tried the Honda tillers and even after they fixed the gearing problem, the tiller blades are still no match for the mantis. The mantis is much easier to handle and a lot more versatile. Not recommended by the mfr. but I use mine to dig large holes for planting rose bushes etc, it bounces off rocks and just goes back in and digs some more, eventually kicking out the rocks. Legendary machine!

5 out of 5 stars IT IS EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH EVERY LAST PENNY!!!   August 10, 2007

I initially "borrowed" one of these for several years from a friend. After I returned it, I ran to the the store to buy my own. Lordy, are these things tough! I bought one with an optional Komatsu red devil engine that is oh so easy to start. Our main garden consists of 16 8 foot by 2 foot raised bed boxes and the mantis is a joy to use in small boxes. Its controllable and manuverable and prepares the beds deeply and beautifully. The best thing about the machine is its weight- you will use this without the hesitation associated with giant rototillers. Five Stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool - tangles an rocks not a problem   July 20, 2008

I got this tiller and immediately put it to use in the yard tilling a new garden in some pretty thick crab grass. I was a little worried after reading some of the other reviews about weeds and roots tangling the blades. I did get the weed reducers and even the special tool to clear the weeds. After a few minutes of use, I was disappointed by a nasty tangle that stopped the machine. The tool cleaned it out fast but then I learned a trick that solved the problem. When using the tool, as soon as you notice it start to bind and slow a little, ease-up on the tool and let it run free for a few seconds. It clears the weeds almost immediately and your back to tilling. Used in this way, the tool works very well and easily digs through tough weeds and grass and even fist-sized rocks. Don't be discouraged by the negative reviews. Get the weed reducers and use this technique to clear the tool.
